Authorities Issue Recommendations After Strong Monday Earthquake: Residents Should Remain Alert for Possible Aftershocks
-
Verify that your home or the building where you live or work has not developed cracks.
-
Contact emergency services or residential emergency brigades and report any damage.
Santiago de Cali, August 10, 2026
Cali was one of the cities most affected by the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred on the morning of Monday, August 10. Therefore, local authorities are asking residents to follow special recommendations due to the possible occurrence of aftershocks.
First, residents should verify the condition of their homes before re-entering them. If there are cracks, please contact emergency response agencies or buildings emergency brigades so they can assess the structure and determine whether it can be safely occupied again.
Following the emergency, turn off gas and water valves and switch off electrical breakers.
Also, use mobile phones only when necessary and for short periods to avoid overloading communication lines.
Avoid sharing news, videos, or messages that have not been verified and may cause panic. Rely only on official sources for information.
If an aftershock occurs, do not run, do not shout, do not push, and do not turn back.
“I ask residents to remain calm. Also check whether your buildings show visible structural damage. If you do not feel safe or if you see major cracks, please stay outside the building,” said Alejandro Eder, Mayor of Cali, emphasizing that remaining calm is the top priority.
Remember: Every citizen should become a first responder and know what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. Use common sense and remain calm.
