Cali will have 90 seconds honoring the victims of the August 10 earthquake

Santiago de Cali, September 9, 2026

This Thursday, September 10, marks one month since the earthquake centered in Chocó shook the country, claiming over 300 lives; 154 of the victims died in Cali. To honor their memory, the Mayor's Office of Santiago de Cali invites the public to join the day's commemorative events.

The day’s activities will begin at 6:00 a.m. with a press conference led by Mayor Alejandro Eder, presenting a report on the actions taken by both the public and private sectors during the city's rescue, recovery, and reconstruction phases. The event will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn (Calle 15A #100–21, Ciudad Jardín).

At 7:34 a.m. various entities will join in a symbolic observance featuring different forms of tribute: The Catholic Church will ring its bells for one minute, and the names of the 154 victims will be read aloud in the park adjacent to the María Inmaculada parish church (Calle 10A #74A–66, Capri neighborhood).

The District Administration calls on the people of Cali to join these observances from wherever they may be waving handkerchiefs, applauding, and sounding their vehicle horns. Citizens are also invited to wear a white garment to honor the earthquake victims.

“We want the voice of Cali to be heard, for it to be felt that we the people of Cali are united, that Cali is all of us, and that we will heal this wound together,” explained Mayor Alejandro Eder.

The third event is the “Ceremony of Light, Gratitude, and Memory,” held in honor of those who lost their lives in the earthquake. Families have been invited to plant 154 trees representing the memory and names of these individuals; the names will be unveiled on a plaque. This activity will be streamed via YouTube and Facebook. The event will be private in order to ensure privacy and respect the families' grief.

To conclude the day's events, starting at 6:00 p.m., RCN will hold a walk and candlelight vigil; the gathering point will be Carrera 66 and Calle 9, and the route will end at the outdoor park at Palmetto Plaza.
